Original 8th Tenn. Infantry Regiment CSA History (Condensed)
29 May 1861 Organized and mustered into state service as part of the Provisional Army of Tennessee; 31 July 1861 Accepted into Confederate service at Big Springs, Virginia; reorganized May 8 1862 into the Army Of Tennessee (AOT) from the Army of Mississippi when all Company letters were changed. On 9 April 1865 the 8th along with 1st, 6th, 9th, 16th, 27th, 28th, 34th Regiments and 24th Tennessee Infantry Battalion were consolidated into the 1st Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The 8th formed Company D of this Regiment. The 8th was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina May 1, 1865.
Battle of Murfreesboro, the 8th's High Water Mark, 29 Dec. 1862 to 2 Jan. 1863
29 Dec. 1862 Battle of Murfreesboro, In the battle the 8th did glorious service, but at a heavy cost, losing 306 casualties out of 474 engaged, including Colonel William L. Moore (Commander) who was killed on 31 December 1862. Lieutenant Colonel John H. Anderson replaced him, and as a full Colonel, commanded the regiment till after the Battle of Nashville, when he was given command of a brigade. In the Battle of Murfreesboro, the brigade captured 11 pieces of artillery and 1000 prisoners of which the 8th Captured 6 artillery pieces and 400 prisoners.
